Off of Key Largo, a large bronze statue of Christ with His arms upraised stands in 33 feet of water the middle of a coral grotto in the Dry Rocks reef. As you can see, corals have begun to grow on the statue. I was lucky enough to snap this pic just as the sun came out from behind a cloud and lit the statue's face.
This was taken in 2003 and I want to go back and do the dive again with my new underwater 7.3 Megapixel camera and see what other corals have decided to plant themselves on the statue.
Unfortunately, the number of divers and snorkers who frequent the site has put stress on the corals immediately surrounding the statue. However, the reef that is on the outside of the grotto is healthy and is home to a wide variety of sealife. I think I counted at least 25 different species of fish including black groupers, barracuda, butterfly fish, parrot fish of various distinctions, angelfish, blue tangs, goatfish, stonefish, silversides and more.
Great shot! This is so cool! I'd love to see the next photo you take with your new camera! The sunlight adds such a nice touch!
I'm thinking about getting my sister a camera to take on dive trips (one that she can use everyday, but has a waterproof case so she can dive with it...) what kind of camera do you use? any suggestions?

I use an Olympus C-7070 with the Olympus underwater housing designed specifically for it. I use the cmera constantly and the housing when I sim, dive, or even it it's just raining. I found the controls very intuitive and easy to use in the housing or out of it. SeaLife and Sea&Sea also make decent digital starter level underwater cameras. However, if one can afford it, I'd get the best quality digital SLR (Canon has a suburb one in the Digital EOS) and a custom underwater housing by Ikelite and strobe units.
I'm very glad that you lik hte shot. I really want to go back and dive the site again.

Sorry for teh long delay in responding but Real Life has been rather bad lately. Yes, you can still see the Christ of the Deep statue. A number of dive operators run trips out to it every day. If you aren't a certified scuba diver, the water is shallow enough that you can snorkel the site.

That is my favorite spot. when I first dove the spot, there where leopord rays every where but I was depressed though because of all the coral skeletons on the bottom. Did you get to see any of the sunken cannons?
